First Listen: Van Halen’s New Single,”Tattoo”

What could possibly be the mother of all comebacks, and the news diehard Van Halen fans have been hoping and praying for.

The band is not only announcing the release of a brand new album, ‘A Different Kind of Truth’, but also-wait for it-the first to feature David Lee Roth in more than 15 years!

Yes, you’ve read that right.

The song “Tattoo,” the first single off the album, sees the return of Roth at his absolute finest (er, and we don’t mean just vocally), delivering a gritty brand of blues-rock, filled with raw, sure to amuse tattoo-inspired lyrics, that include the likes of “Elvis on my elbow”, “Swap Meet Sally” and “trampstamp.”

And then there’s the mastery of Eddie Van Halen, who delivers a killer guitar solo, and who has undoubtedly passed some of that genius onto his son, Wolfgang, who’s an amazing bassist and official member of the band.

Despite the long separation, there’s no doubt the band’s chemistry remains very much intact to the delight of its fan base and the song is nothing short of an incredible choice for a first single.

But we’ll stop the chatter for now and let you witness the magic for yourself.

We should probably mention that a deluxe reissue of ‘Tomboy’ has been released, consisting of the full album, ‘single’ versions of several tracks, a few unreleased instrumentals and a 16-page booklet, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. The reissue is limited to just 5000 copies.

The Black Keys Explain Their Decision Not To Allow Streaming of ‘El Camino’

The Black Keys have just dropped their new record, ‘El Camino’, last week and are currently in the middle of a huge promotional tour of the album.

In the weeks leading to the official release date, the band streamed a few singles off the album, going viral with the video of their single “Lonely Boy”.

So amidst the avalanche of publicity pre and post-album release, it is not surprising then that band has suddenly stirred up some “controversy” recently, when they declared that they would not allow streaming of ‘El Camino’ on sites like Spotify and MOG.

In response to all the hoopla, the band clarified their position when asked about it during an interview with VH1, in which drummer Patrick Carney explained:

“[Streaming services] are becoming more popular, but it still isn’t at a point where you’re able to replace royalties from record sales with the royalties from streams…For a band that makes a living selling music, it’s not at a point where it’s feasible for us.”

Carney added that he endorses services like Pandora, where fans are able to sample and discover new music on a song-by-song basis, but commented that the Spotifys of the world are “set up to be a little more fair for the labels than for the artists.”

So there you have it! What do you think? Should bands allow streaming of their new releases?

Lana Del Rey to Headline MTV Brand New for 2012 in London

MTV UK has announced its final shortlist of nominations for the most promising new acts of 2012.

One of our favorites break-out artists, singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey, has made it to the shortlist of ten nominees, and she will be sharing the stage with The Maccabees and Charli XCX on January 24.

For those less familiar, in the last four years MTV Brand New has identified a wide range of up-and-coming artists- a list that included the likes of Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber & Ke$ha, Tinie Tempah, Wretch 32 and Jessie J- as stars to watch. Also for the first time, this year’s list will also include the UK’s best unsigned act to fill the tenth nominee spot.

Other acts that made it to this year’s final shortlist, announced at KOKO on December 1, include Angel, Clement Marfo And The Frontline, Conor Maynard, King Charles, Lianne La Havas and Michael Kiwanuka.
Tickets go on sale on December 12 at 11am and you can get more details here.

Here’s The Maccabees with their latest single, “Pelican”, to be released January 1, 2012.

Radiohead To Release Two New Singles

Radiohead is announcing that they will release two new tracks- “The Daily  Mail” and “Staircase”– as singles on December 19. Both tracks were  part of their ‘From the Basement’ series, recorded earlier this year.

The new singles will coincide with the release of the band’s upcoming new effort, a series of remixed singles titled The King of Limbs: Live From the Basement’, available digitally on December 19.  A DVD/Blu-Ray version will be available on January 23 in the UK and January 31 in the United States, to be distributed by independent record stores.

Here’s “Staircase”, a live ‘From the Basement’ performance, recorded in June 2011:

Watch: Florence + The Machine “Never Let Me Go” (AOL Sessions)

Here’s a great unplugged version of their hit “Never Let Me Go”, performed by the the sensational English indie pop band, Florence + The Machine, as part of their AOL Live Sessions.

Hearing the enormously talented Florence Welsh deliver such a brilliant acoustic performance is an amazing treat.

The band’s setlist included a total of five songs off their second studio album, ‘Ceremonials‘, released in October, which included “Shake it Out”, “Cosmic Love”, “Dog Days Are Over” and “What The Water Gave Me”.

The sessions also included a Behind the Scenes video and an interview.
